Digital isn’t forever

This is a PSA for all of you with prescious digital memories.

We’re all convinced that what’s on the internet is forever that we forget how fragile our whole system is. While is it true that once you upload something, the traces will linger around forever. It’s also true that if you don’t maintain the things you care about, it will eventually break down.

This past week I was terrified to find out my blog was gone, my automatic payment renewal for my website didn’t go through for some reason and everything went offline, with no way to retrive the data.

I panicked.

Hard.

Fortunately being a little bit of a cautious guy and doomsday planner, I remembered I an old back out saved somewhere. I’ve lost some private posts but at least I was able to salvage most of it.

Funny enough while my personal IT apocalypse was going on, Crowdstrike took down the whole IT department all over world. From airports, hospitals, wallstreet, no one was safe. It really goes to show how fragile our modern infratructure and life style really is.

I know so many of us have presciuos photos and videos with the poeple with love on the cloud, pc or phone, whithout any physical media to back it up.

It would be a tragedy to loose all those all those prescious moments when those devices eventually fail

Last year I went to visit my grandparents’ place, and held some pictures that were left behind.

There is something special about holding a pic in your hand rather than seeing it on a screen and I, for once, think that that was a much better way to preserve it.

I was planning for quite a bit to print out some pics and make an album, I guess life has a twisted sense of humor in remind you of things.

Well I’m listening now, don’t poke me again pookie.
